Namtok Kaeng Song

phitsanulok

Powerful cascades thunder down limestone cliffs at Namtok Kaeng Song, creating one of Sukhothai’s most impressive multi-tiered waterfalls. The name translates to “Two Rapids Waterfall,” referring to the distinct levels where water crashes over rocky ledges before pooling in natural basins below. Unlike many tourist-heavy waterfalls in Thailand, this natural wonder maintains its wild character, surrounded by dense tropical forest that feels untouched by mass tourism.

Crystal-clear water plunges approximately 30 meters in dramatic stages, with the upper tier offering the most spectacular views and photo opportunities. Swimming is possible in several deep pools formed by the falling water, though the current can be strong during peak flow periods. The surrounding jungle echoes with bird calls and the constant rush of water, while the air carries the fresh scent of wet limestone and tropical vegetation. Short hiking trails wind through the forest, leading to different viewpoints where you can appreciate both the waterfall’s power and the lush canopy overhead. The mist from the cascades creates a natural cooling system, making even hot days comfortable.

Pure tranquility defines the experience here, broken only by the rhythmic sound of water meeting stone. Few visitors make the journey, so you’ll likely have large portions of this natural amphitheater to yourself. The interplay of sunlight filtering through the canopy and dancing on the water creates an almost meditative atmosphere. Standing near the base of the falls, the spray on your face and the thunderous sound surrounding you provides a genuine connection with Thailand’s wild side.

Visit during or shortly after the rainy season (June through November) when water levels peak and the cascades reach their full dramatic potential. The waterfall is accessible via a moderate 20-minute hike from the parking area along the Phitsanulok-Lom Sak Road. Bring sturdy footwear for the sometimes slippery trail, swimwear if you plan to take a dip, and plenty of water. The free admission and relatively easy access make this a rewarding detour for anyone exploring Sukhothai’s natural attractions.
