Koh Tao
เกาะเต่า
Scuba diving mecca with relaxed, island vibes and stunning beauty.
Koh Tao: Thailand’s Dive Capital
This small island in Surat Thani province has earned its reputation as Thailand’s premier scuba diving destination. Koh Tao draws underwater enthusiasts from around the world who come for affordable PADI certifications, vibrant coral reefs, and that laid-back island atmosphere you can’t find on the mainland. The island attracts backpackers, dive professionals, and anyone seeking a slower pace away from Thailand’s busier beach destinations. Within the Gulf of Thailand region, Koh Tao stands out as the place where serious divers go to train, explore underwater sites, and often end up staying much longer than planned.
Top Things To Do
Scuba diving dominates the island’s activity scene, and for good reason. The surrounding waters offer excellent visibility and diverse marine life perfect for both beginners and advanced divers. PADI certification courses are incredibly popular and affordable here compared to other destinations worldwide. Many visitors arrive planning a few days and leave weeks later with their Open Water or Advanced certifications. Beyond diving, snorkeling trips let you explore the underwater world without full gear. The island’s small size makes it perfect for motorbike exploration, leading you to viewpoints, quiet beaches, and local restaurants. Rock climbing has grown in popularity, with several spots offering routes for different skill levels. Sunset watching becomes a daily ritual, particularly from the western viewpoints.
Where To Stay
With 43 hotels and resorts plus 2 retreats, you’ll find accommodation averaging $56 per night, with options ranging from free hostels to $214 luxury villas. The Place Luxury Boutique Villas and Koh Tao Heights Pool Villas cater to travelers seeking upscale comfort. Monkey Flower Villas and View Point Resort offer solid mid-range options with great locations. Budget divers often choose The Dearly Koh Tao Hostel-PADI 5 Star Dive Resort, which combines affordable beds with professional dive training. The variety means solo backpackers, couples, and diving groups all find suitable options within their budgets.
Getting There
Reaching Koh Tao requires a ferry journey since there’s no airport on the island. Most travelers fly into Bangkok or Koh Samui, then take buses and ferries to reach the island. The Lomprayah and Seatran ferries run regular services from the mainland ports of Chumphon and Surat Thani, as well as from nearby Koh Samui and Koh Phangan. The journey from Bangkok involves an overnight bus to Chumphon followed by a morning ferry, taking about 10-12 hours total. From Koh Samui, ferries take around 2 hours.
Best Time To Visit
The Gulf coast wet season runs October through December, making January through September your best bet for diving and beach activities. March through May brings the hottest temperatures but excellent underwater visibility. June through August sees moderate crowds and good weather conditions. While the wet season brings afternoon showers and rougher seas, diving still continues year-round. Many dive shops actually prefer the quieter wet season months for training courses.
Practical Tips
ATMs are available in the main areas, though some charge fees for international cards. Most dive shops, restaurants, and hotels speak English well since tourism revolves around international visitors. Motorbike rental is the standard way to get around the island - just ensure you have proper licenses and insurance. The island runs on a slower schedule, so don’t expect mainland efficiency. Bring reef-safe sunscreen since you’ll likely spend considerable time in the water.
Insider Tip: Book your PADI courses directly with dive shops rather than through hotels or online platforms. You’ll often get better prices and can choose instructors who match your learning style. Many shops offer package deals combining accommodation with dive courses.
